Unsound has cemented its position as a major force in Krakow, helping define the city’s contemporary cultural identity via its annual festival. As previously revealed, Unsound is now taking things one step further, by working with cafe and bar Forum Przestrzenie to start a year-round club called 89 set to shake up the city’s nightlife. Positioned beneath the abandoned Hotel Forum in a former strip club, the club features untouched 80s communist-era decor evokes the atmosphere of a David Lynch movie.
Pre-opening events already took place during Unsound in the shape of legendary (and slightly messy!) daytime after parties. Now it’s time for 89 to officially open.
The opening weekend starts on Friday 4.11 with UK legend of dub music and long-time Unsound friend Kevin Martin aka The Bug playing a 3-hour dub, dancehall and bashment session. Alongside is rising UK underground DJ Tash_LC, known for the African rhythms propelling her sets, and Polish footwork promoter DJ Paide.
On Saturday 5.11, the night moves in the direction of techno/house with Huerco S. and another old Unsound friend Rabih Beaini (aka Morphosis) both playing 2-hour DJ sets. Opening is Bartosz Kruczyński, ex-member of Ptaki, also known as The Phantom. Kraków’s DiscoMule closes the night.
The following weekend again sees Friday 11.11 devoted more to bass sounds, with DJ sets from acclaimed producer Jlin and London’s Covco. They are joined by two established Polish producers FORXST and Rhythm Baboon, respectively working with the new sounds of hip-hop and footwork. Rusałka closes the night.
A major feature of 89 will be a series called All Night Long aka ANL, where DJ’s will have the opportunity to create an extended narrative via a single set throughout the arc of a night. The first in this series is the legendary DJ Bone, playing from 11pm until the very early morning.
Alongside club nights, 89 will also host live music during weeknights - from ambient to noise to improv and beyond. Like Unsound itself, the club will be aimed both at locals and audiences from abroad.
The logo and first designs for 89 are created by Optigram - aka Manuel Sepulveda - the graphic designer responsible for the covers of many iconic Hyperdub and Planet Mu records. The logo is inspired by the unique interior design of 89, based around circles.
