Unsound Productions artist JLIN will return to the festival, this time to present the European premiere of Autobiography Edits with COMPANY WAYNE McGREGOR, which had its world premiere at Unsound Toronto. This show is a compact, specially produced version of choreographer Wayne McGregor’s dance work Autobiography, inspired by McGregor’s own DNA sequence. Jlin performs her original score, created in collaboration with Unsound, live on stage alongside the dancers, who perform a selection of dance pieces which have algorithmically assembled into a unique sequence for every performance.

The world premiere of Magna Surgat - the great awakening - sees producer RABIT join forces with visual artist SAM ROLFES and multidisciplinary collective HOUSE OF KENZO. Having delivered legendary collaborative shows in Texas, the ensemble will now present a large scale utilising motion capture technology to create a realtime semi-improvisational 3D performance that is transformative, transgressive and revealing.

2018 is the 10th anniversary of PAN, with whom we’ve worked closely since presenting a PAN stage at Unsound in 2012. To celebrate we’ll collaborate on PAN X UNSOUND via performances, a joint discourse program and special actions. One of the themes this program will explore is how artist projects can incorporate emerging technologies into their work. With the upcoming release of their debut album, AMNESIA SCANNER will present the premiere of AS Oracle, for which Amnesia Scanner’s AI/spirit member joins them for the first time on stage. The artist TCF aka LARS HOLDHUS will give a weeklong workshop in bot creation, working with the Unsound community to create bots that will participate in the festival online. He will also present TCFX, an AI version of TCF that will perform live for the first time. More PAN X UNSOUND information will follow in the next announcement.

ALVA NOTO will make his Unsound debut with a show connected to the latest album in his Uni- series: Unieqav. Created last decade to perform a club-oriented set, this cycle explores a more rhythmic side of Carsten Nicolai’s music, taking inspiration from the intersection of pure mathematics and science, exploring nature, language, code and data through immersive music and visual elements.

PRESENCE also includes musicians of different generations who encourage listeners to focus and slow down, including TERRY RILEY, a pioneering figure whose work has, since the late ’60s, aspired toward spiritual transcendence. His unique compositions, partly inspired by Indian classical music and jazz, count among early minimalist masterpieces, pushing forward not only classical music but also rock and electronic sounds. In his first ever Polish appearance, he comes to Unsound for a very special show in the Wieliczka Salt Mine, appearing with his son guitarist GYAN RILEY.

Canadian TIM HECKER has a history of presenting special projects at Unsound. This year he will bring a new show with traditional Japanese Gagaku court musicians. Blending digital and acoustic sounds, minimalism and his unique take on noise, Hecker and the ensemble will present this new work at Unsound ahead of an album to be released by Kranky later in the year.

German producer CHRISTOPH DE BABALON - whose excellent 1998 album If You’re Into It, I’m Out of It was recently reissued to wider audiences - joins forces with the Polish audiovisual duo WIDT to present TEYAS. This new work will also be released as an album for Bocian Records combining ambient elements, dramatic vocals and elements of drum & bass. Also employing spectral sounds is LUCRECIA DALT, whose Anticlines, a melange of dreamy, barely present radiophonic sounds, is among the finest releases of 2018. Changes in time and space are crucial to the work of LEA BERTUCCI, an American composer and horn player whose minimalist patterns and transcendent drones explore architecture and sound through site-specific presentations.

Poland’s RESINA is about to release her second album, Traces, expanding her heavily layered and processed cello with rhythms and vocals, taking inspiration from memory, violence, the ravages of time and damaged religious artifacts. IRREVERSIBLE ENTANGLEMENTS originally formed to perform at a Musicians Against Police Brutality event. The MOOR MOTHER-fronted quintet fights against injustice, addressing black trauma, survival and power over powerful free jazz.

Late nights in Hotel Forum feature stalwarts of club music: live shows come from the likes of hardcore techno originator THE MOVER (aka Marc Acardipane), drum & bass icon DJ STORM, the celebrated British DJ BEN UFO and modular-synthesizer expert BLAWAN with a rare live show connected to his debut album release Wet Will Always Dry. ZENKER BROTHERS will play their first official b2b set with SKEE MASK, whose album Compro recently met with resounding acclaim. OLOF DREIJER of THE KNIFE will also DJ, with a playful set traversing geography and genre.

Making her first major European festival appearance, Rio de Janeiro rapper LINN DA QUEBRADA breaks sexual, gender and bodily paradigms by mixing Brazilian funk, African influences and vogue. Funk can be also heard in Brazilian SUPERFICIE’s blend of live sounds with futuristic club music. Egyptian rapper ROZZMA is at the forefront of a new Cairo sound, colliding synths, beats and processed Arabic music. Geopolitical concerns are also present in the work of Tunisia’s DEENA ABDELWAHED’s music, similarly informed by both contemporary electronic music and traditional North African styles.

More live shows come from Canadian MARIE DAVIDSON and Spanish industrial artist JASSS. DJs on the rise include Discwoman’s SHYBOI, with a dynamic set blurring techno with other genres; Nyege Nyege-affiliated KAMPIRE, one of the most exciting African DJs; Chicago High Priestess of the Motherbeat ERIS DREW; and Kim Jong-un mask-wearing DJ BUS REPLACEMENT SERVICE, whose unique sets combine eclecticism, comedy and the fine art of not giving a shit!

ASYNC FIGURE is a new collaboration between British producers and DJs MM & SUDA, who will premiere an immersive live show with a combination of music and lights that aim to disrupt and destabilise perception. The British producer IGLOOGHOST’s hyperactive cross-genre dance music is coupled with an extensive backstory and a host of animated characters, presented in a new A/V show. Also pushing boundaries between virtual and ostensibly non-virtual realities is HDMIRROR, whose internet-fed sound clashes hardcore, gabber and trance in an overwhelming way. The overload of social-media feeds has also inspired OKLOU to record much calmer music, intertwining cozy songs with sound collages created from Instastories.

Stay tuned for another massive artist announcement at the start of July, as well as some details of our daytime discourse program! In the meantime, you can sign up to our Facebook event page here to get the latest news.

Deena Abdelwahed, JASSS and Oklou are supported by the SHAPE Platform.
