THIRD WAVE OF ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR "UNSOUND KRAKOW: INTERFERENCE" UNDERLINES THE FESTIVAL'S DEVOTION TO THE ECCENTRIC, THE ECLECTIC AND THE UNDERGROUND

Unsound Krakow has just released the next round of names for their 2013 event, taking place between 13 - 20 October.

The additions extend the idea of this year's INTERFERENCE theme, in sound and culture alike. This round also contains a strong focus on artists from the U.S., as in recent years tightening the Unsound connection between Krakow and New York. (After taking 2013 off, Unsound New York is once again scheduled for 2014.)

One of the key projects this year is UNDERGROUND RESISTANCE PRESENTS: INTERSTELLAR FUGITIVES. The Detroit label collective are experts in interference; resolutely DIY and anti-bullshit, they continue to jam the system with their political, community-based, anti-commercialist agenda. At a time when club music feels particularly bereft of deep concept and, too often, driven by fame-seeking and profit motive, UR's brand of activism is perhaps more important than ever. Their Unsound appearance will not only be a specially crafted show connected to the theme, it will also mark their Polish premiere.

RHYS CHATHAM and CHARLEMAGNE PALESTINE - two of America's most distinctive minimalist / avant-garde composers - will perform live together for the first time in over three decades. A former member of Tony Conrad's The Dream Syndicate, Chatham first became widely known as one of the key figures of New York's No Wave scene in the late 1970's, whilst Palestine was a contemporary of artists such as Philip Glass, Terry Riley and Steve Reich - although his intense, ritualistic music also places him in a zone all his own. The show will take place in the 15th century St Katherine's Church, one of Unsound's most celebrated venues.

Also perfectly suited to St Katherine's church is JULIANNA BARWICK, with her Polish debut. She will give a special show in collaboration with a Polish girls' choir, exploring the sound of her upcoming album "Nepthene", which was recorded in Iceland with Alex Somers (musician/producer of Sigur Rós and Jónsi). The music is an evolution of Barwick's ethereal sound, primarily shaped with layers of voice yet now containing more distinct elements.

Unsound has confirmed some other heavy hitters from the experimental world, where INTERFERENCE is of course the name of the game. MIKA VAINIO, formerly one part of PAN SONIC, will follow up on this year's superb album "Kilo", where force and restraint combine to create a frightening unity. NATE YOUNG, of WOLF EYES, will give his first Polish show, presenting music that has been described as the synthesised sound of nightmares. Polish artist ANNA ZARADNY, already confirmed to open Unsound London at the end of September, will also open Unsound Krakow with her intense, highly focused sound.

This darker realms of music are also represented with a rare show from B/B/S/, a cross-border Norwegian/Canadian/Italian "supergroup" featuring ERIK SKODVIN (aka Svarte Greiner, half of Deaf Center), AIDAN BAKER (Nadia) and ANDREA BELFI, forging a dark, sometimes rhythmic sound veering from drone to dub out of guitar, percussion and synth. As announced last week, Irish band ALTAR OF PLAGUES will perform their last ever show at Unsound, including material from their critically acclaimed 2013 album "Teethed Glory and Injury", which extends their black metal derived sound further into experimental / industrial music.

Unsound has become known for presenting music that inhabits the cracks between club and experimental scenes, geographically located subcultures and the all-encompassing expanse of Internet. HIPPOS IN TANKS and UNO NYC both pursue the weird and eclectic in different ways, interfering with safe borders that many other labels establish.

From HIT, JAMES FERRARO will launch "NYC, HELL 3:00AM" during Unsound, an album in which samples from 9/11 news coverage, surveillance camera audio, TV ads and other sources are arranged together to create "a surreal psychological sculpture of American decay and confusion, a map of New York's nihilism and its self referential hedonism."

DEAN BLUNT will present THE REDEEMER, his first official solo LP, a collection of songs, sound mosaics and string sections. Joining Dean will be a string quartet drawn including members of Sinfonietta Cracovia. Along with ROBERT RICH's Sleep Concert, this show is one of a few special events this year outside the main festival nightly program. It takes place on the afternoon of Friday 18 October at Teatr Stary, one of Poland's best-known theaters, and due to limited capacity requires a separate ticket on top of the pass for 20 PLN (around 5 Euros).

Directly linking the two labels is abstract beatmaker ARCA, an artist due to drop an LP with HIT and who earlier put out releases with UNO NYC. His music draws on R&B, twisting it with very contemporary electronic elements; Arca recently gained further attention as one of the collaborators on the Kanye West album "Yeezus", as well as for a fascinating mix called &&&&&

MYKKI BLANCO has become perhaps the best known artist on the UNO NYC roster. Rapper, performance artist and poet, her transgendered identity is a form of interference in the rap world. Pitchfork described her "Initiation" EP as "a deadly serious manifesto from an artist who wants you to discard your preconceptions and set fire to them."

GOBBY's connection with Unsound thus far has been playing a wild drum solo during Hype Williams' Unsound Festival New York show; now he comes to play solo at Unsound Krakow. The music on his forward-reaching UNO NYC EP "New Hat" was described by RA as "Villalobos and Dettmann in the pile next to the woodchips" and "like something Shed might keep locked up in his basement and never speak of". Since then, he's released the follow up full-length "Fashion Lady" to international acclaim.

Also added to the younger generation of New York artists mentioned above is ANTHONY NAPLES (Mr Saturday Night). His track "Mad Disrespect" was one of the most memorable releases of 2012, taking him out of the Brooklyn loft party scene and into the international spotlight, from where he has released a number of excellent house/techno EP's. VENUS X is the force behind New York's Ghe20 Goth1k parties, which have taken place in various New York locations since 2009. She is known for her genre-bending, post-Internet DJ style, fusing everything from Dominican Dembow to pop and underground club tunes.

The legendary producer and DJ I-F aka INTERR-FERENCE could be invited this year for his name alone - but it's his music of course that makes him essential. Described by Boomkat as "the total doyen of the Dutch electro/ital/disko scene", I-F is a former associate of Unit Moebius. His work grew out of the Hague and Rotterdam rave scenes, and has had a huge influence on underground club music; most recently, he can be seen as an important reference point for many releases on L.I.E.S.

Regarding L.I.E.S, SVENGALISGHOST has been confirmed to represent that label at the the festival. A veteran of the Chicago loft party scene, his music joins industrialised acid house with techno groves and sci-fi vibes.

Our Weekly and Weekend passes sold out last week, but to go with this announcement we have released a limited number more. They will go on sale at 11am today. After they have sold out, you can purchase individual tickets to all events in August.
