Bubbles – An All Night Trip With Jigoku

Bubbles – An All Night Trip With Jigoku

As a special 20th anniversary Unsound treat, we’ve asked Jigoku – aka Lovely Jon and Cherrystones – to return to the festival to curate one of their legendary all-night movie marathons. The result is what they describe as ‘an eternal, psyched out interconnected cine-bubble via an astonishing array of off kilter, bizarre, out-there features and shorts guaranteed to blow minds and melt eyeballs. The cinema will become your inner displacement from the “real world”’.

Dug up from the past, the program includes Canadian animated short Hunger (dir. Peter Foldes, 1974), French drugged-out time travel feature Hu Man (dir. Jerome Laperrousaz, 1975), horror feature The Erotic Circus (dir. Henri Pachard, 1969), Brian de Palma’s early short Woton’s Wake (1963) and hyper-demented guerilla film Split (dir. Chris Shaw, 1989) – which Jigoku suggest was a huge influence on the Matrix series.

All films are in English language or with English subtitles. Tickets available here.

Movie maraton is on Saturday/Sunday night.

09.10.2022, SUNDAY - Kino Pod Baranami

00:01 - 05:00, JIGOKU MOVIE MARATHON

HUNGER (CANADA/DIR PETER FOLDES/1974/11MINS)

The Unsound/Jigoku all night bubble trip kicks off with this enveloping animated meditation on consumerism and entrapment. The majestic, early experimentation of Peter Foldes's computer-generated visuals sees a greedy individual consume and metamorphosis into grotesque caricatures. Top end dream psychedelia at its finest!

HU-MAN (FRANCE/DIR JÉRÔME LAPERROUSAZ/1975/86 MINS/FRENCH LANGUAGE - ENGLISH SUBTITLES)

The great Terence Stamp produces and stars as a wrecked actor grieving for the suicide of his wife. After self isolation he is offered a comeback opportunity to take part in a revolutionary time travel programme to be beamed live around the world. However, there is a glitch. To enable him to travel through the time barrier he must place himself in death defying locations. A previously lost gem channeling Jean Luc Godard, Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker, Dennis Hopper’s Last Movie and Kurt Vonnegut Jr's Slaughterhouse 5, Laperrousaz's drugged out mind trip hits all the right 70s pop art buttons. Featuring an upfront avant-garde electro soundscape by the mighty Patrick Vian alongside musical contributions from Eric Burdon and Gong.

THE EROTIC CIRCUS (US/DIR HENRI PACHARD AKA RON SULLIVAN/1969/57 MINS)

This wired John Waters-esque retreat into drug fuelled psychotronic squalor is the brainchild of early porn film director Ron Sullivan (long time Unsound patrons will recall the now legendary screening of the no wave grindhouse classic Headless Eyes, a film that Sullivan produced and edited). A deranged riff on Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None transposed to the rural backwoods, drug monster Louis and his two freakish companions Mary and Debbie visit the dealer's oddball sister and caretaker Yenos. However, an insane killer traps the guests, bumping them off one by one.... A delirious, improvised, debauched exploitation/arthouse wonder ripe for rediscovery.

WOTON'S WAKE (US/DIR BRIAN DE PALMA/1963/20 MINS)

Spectral sculpter Woton terrorizes New York couples with a blowtorch. One of his creations comes to life in the form of a young woman and goes on the run, heightening the artist's madness. A frenzied scream from the hip underground, Brian De Palma's fever dream is the audio visual equivalent of mescal – with John Herbet McDowell's dada-ist cut up soundtrack enhancing the sense of disorientation....

SPLIT (US/DIRECTOR CHRIS SHAW/1989/84 MINS)

Starker, a mysterious stranger, roams the streets of LA changing his appearance to evade the sinister Bio-Tech inter-dimensional agency overseen by The Director. Starker holds a computer disc he believes will free humanity from its socially engineered slavery.... Hyper demented guerilla fimaking guaranteed to smash your atoms. Featuring mind-blowing early CG FX, this film is a huge unacknowledged influence on the Wachowski's Matrix Quadrology.
