ABADIR

After almost a decade playing rock music, Cairo-born Rami Abadir had reached a creative brick wall. But after a short stint improvising with experimental artists in 2010, he grabbed a drum machine and synthesizer and embarked on a foray into electronic music that would help re-focus his artistic instincts. He developed a sonic signature using an array of techniques, first dedicating himself to analog synthesis and then re-assessing the possibilities of digital expression. Early releases like 2018's "Clattered Tell" and 2020's "Liminal" broadcast Abadir's wide-ranging interests, soaking in dub, ambient, experimental club and sound collage elements, but it was 2021's substantial "Pause/Sutter/Uh/Repeat" that truly cemented his process. The result of his MA thesis, the album showcased Abadir's scientific sound design procedures, considering obsolete speech patterns and centering these elements in a cybernetic sprawl of collapsing beats and galvanized SFX. This year's "Mutate", released on Shanghai imprint SVBKVLT, directs his attention towards the dancefloor, melting jungle, Jersey club and footwork patterns into Arabic rhythms in a call and response that's way beyond simple deconstruction.
