When she was a teenager, Delia Beatriz relocated from Mexico to a border town in the USA. This sense of duality is at the core of her artistry, whether she's balancing ambient sounds and sci-fi club on her N.A.A.F.I.-released debut "Animus", or combining industrial techno with tribal guarachero on the 2019's "System". Her latest album is her most ambitious and critically acclaimed to date, drawing in her academic studies in electro-acoustic music, and using this knowledge to inform historical research into pre-Hispanic Mexican instrumentation. "The Long Count", released this year on UK label Modern Love, uses complex machine learning techniques to process digital instruments Beatriz developed from the archive of Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico's Mayan Studies Institute. The result is a magickal portal into the distant past that sounds both ancient and tantalizingly futuristic. Debit will be performing "The Long Count" live at this year's Unsound Krakow.
