FLIBBERTWIRL

Description

In Room 1, Polish experimental hip-hop producer Przemysław Jankowiak – best known as 1988 – returns to Unsound with a new project and premiere A/V liveshow as 2K88, with music based on ’90s and ’00s Polish rap nostalgia, but steeped in references to UK club music. Following is London’s Tirzah, who brings her new live show, singing over dusty club-inspired beats from the great Mica Levi. Nick Léon will perform the European premiere of his new live show, showcasing the Miami-kissed, bass-heavy productions that have seen his star rise in recent years. Berlin-based Italian sonic alchemist Shapednoise released the distorted Absurd Matter this summer, collaborating with Moor Mother and Armand Hammer, and will now team up with Spanish multidisciplinary artist Sevi Iko Dømochevsky for an explosive A/V live performance. Rosa Pistola, who was born and raised in Colombia but now lives in Mexico City, promises to heat up the temperature even more with a frothy mix of underground Latin American dancefloor material. Meanwhile, Toccororo is a Cuban-Spanish DJ colliding the darker side of Latinx club music with techno and hardstyle, Jersey club and ballroom. Closing out the room will be Philadelphia’s edit queen estoc, bringing furious hard techno and bass-heavy sounds from the world’s farthest corners. Tonight’s in(ter)vention comes from French sound artist and guitarist Julien Desprez.

New York City noisemakers Kill Alters and Dreamcrusher will perform a vs. set in Room 2, blurring plunderphonic noise into carnivalesque, tape-dubbed post-punk. And it’s hard not to be excited about Detroit’s HiTech, a Detroit-based trio who propel hi-energy jit into the far future, spicing the sound with elements of footwork, techno, rap and R&B. Jordanian original Toumba will join with a live premiere, using Arabic tarab and shelat forms to guide some of the year’s most exciting club sounds. Príncipe’s Nídia – a core producer on Fever Ray’s recent album – will play a DJ the day after the release of her new album 95 MINDJERES. Opening the room is Jsá, whose eclectic, mood-shifting sets are full of pop and meme references, whilst Unsound resident Hermeneia closes with a set of bassy bangers.
