Bastarda

Bastarda is a Polish trio featuring Paweł Szamburski on clarinet, Tomasz Pokrzywiński on cello and Michał Górczyński on contrabass clarinet. Together, they reinterpret medieval music for funeral rituals. Mourning marks the end, but Bastarda’s interpretation points also at a new beginning of peace and, finally, silence.

Bastarda’s piece ‘Aperte’, which means ‘opening’ in Latin, was recorded in May 2020. The composition is based on a chant from Valentin Triller’s Silesian Songbook (1555), corresponding with springtime in the Lutheran liturgical calendar. Bastarda’s intention was to find new energy—a metaphoric light in the darkness so many of us have experienced recently.
