A sound artist, producer, curator, theorist and researcher, Amr El-Alamy, aka 1127, is an enigmatic figure in experimental music, burying his complex themes under fractured melodies, corroded loops and opaque rave vapors. He's been engaged in the study of music technology and its globalizing cultural and contextual implications since way back in 2008, and these messages whirl like digital ghosts around albums like 2019's 'Tqaseem Mqamat El Haram' and this year's astonishing ' ض', both released on the Nashazphone imprint. On the latter, he suggests a fresh mutation of early 20th-century Egyptian music, braiding its signature tonality with gritty street noise, harsh ambience and cybernetic drill, jungle and trap rhythms to sketch a cracked, chaotic portrait of contemporary Giza.
