DISCUSSION: CURATING IN THE AGE OF GEOPOLITICAL UPHEAVAL

Description

Recent geopolitical upheaval and military aggression have presented challenges and ethical quandaries for artists, curators, and cultural workers. The Russian invasion of Ukraine and Israel’s destruction of Gaza have heightened expectations for artists and festivals to make declarative choices, often when governments, private enterprises and institutions make it difficult to do so. Amidst the noise of social media, what’s the difference between a performative gesture and a meaningful expression of solidarity? Can music, art, and culture bring people together, even when their respective governments are engaged in conflict or illegal aggression? When are cultural boycotts warranted, and under what conditions? With contributing moderator Sebastian Cichocki, curator at Warsaw’s Museum of Modern Art, participants include Ukrainian journalist/cultural organiser Maya Baklanova, artist agent/writer Yuko Asanuma and curator/writer Edwin Nasr.
