Unsound News Day 3: Tuesday October 1
Welcome to the third day of Unsound!
As every day during the week, the festival office opens at Krzysztofory Palace at 12:00 midday (entrance from ul. Szczepańska 2). Go here to exchange your festival tickets for a wristband, ask questions, purchase tickets, or attend the discourse program. There’s an individual ticket summary here, showing what’s on sale and what’s sold out. You can also download the Unsound app via the App Store or Android.
The music program kicks off with another Morning Glory show at 11:00. This morning it takes place in the Japanese Manggha Museum, where the Portuguese composer Rafael Toral will perform Spectral Evolution, his ambient work for guitar and electronics based on birdsong – perfect for waking up and preparing for an Unsound day. Doors open at 10:30am, and it’s free.
The daytime discourse program starts at 12:30 at Krzysztofory Palace, with Australian music and visual artist Robin Fox presenting Channelling Violence and the Divine, a talk that is part memoir and part a response to Attali’s classic book Noise: The Political Economy of Music. At 13:45, Post-Music: Soundcheck Competitions – by Aadita Chaudhury and artist duo Y7 – explores the phenomenon of Indian soundcheck soundsystems.
Following at 15:15 is Mapping Tinnitus, a discussion of ringing and buzzing in the ears featuring promoter and music journalist Seb Wheeler, researchers and authors Marie Thompson and Mack Hagood, and moderator Cyryl Rozwadowski. Closing today’s discourse program is Metal and Modernism, a documentary performance by writer and broadcaster John Doran and artist Sapphire Goss, tracing the history of heavy metal from Black Sabbath and Mayhem to Sunn O))).
You can also participate in a choir workshop for non-musicians by Palestinian musician and researcher Bint Mbareh. The only requirements are courage and a willingness to listen. This takes place at Kopernika 15 at 14:00. Registration required – there are a few last minute spots left.
A wild night of music called CLASH takes place back at Manggha Museum at 19:30 (doors at 19:00), and features Dutch artist upsammy’s trippy, bass-heavy club music brought to life in new ways in a collaboration with percussionist Valentina Magaletti; South Korean artist bela with a commissioned A/V performance based on their 2024 Subtext/Unsound album Noise and Cries 굉음과 울음; and MOPCUT, a three-headed noise behemoth made up of US-based experimental vocalist Audrey Chen, French guitarist Julien Desprez and percussionist Lukas König. Glasgow artist Harry Górski-Brown opens with a set incorporating dismantled, amplified and part-improvised electroacoustic Highland Bagpipes. There are a few tickets left online.
Last but not least, whether you want it or not at 23:00 Unsound Karaoke will make a return to Feniks, Krakow’s oldest music club, just off the city’s picturesque Main Square. Drop by, have a chat or drink, and sing a song!
