John Cale presents Steam on Glass
John Cale was a founding member of the Velvet Undergound – as crucial as Lou Reed in creating its influential sound – and was also a key figure in New York’s 1960s experimental scene, working with the likes of Le Monte Young, Tony Conrad and Terry Riley. He has also produced classic albums by Nico, Patti Smith. Squeeze, The Young Lovers, The Happy Mondays – and many more. As a solo artist he has built an incredibly distinct body of work, and at age 83 he shows no signs of slowing down – in 2024 he released his 17th solo album, the acclaimed POPtical Illusion. At Unsound New York, he will present Steam on Glass – evolving sound clouds, exploring noise, improv, and experimentation while tracing his New York City lineage. He will showcase his vast repertoire of songs, from the academic experimentation that led to the formation of The Velvet Underground to his multi-genre stepping stones and current works.
