billy woods feat. DJ Haram
Based in New York City, billy woods has been shaping his voice as a rapper for decades at this point. It was way back in '03 when he minted his Backwoodz Studioz imprint, after being inspired by artists like Cannibal Ox and MF DOOM, and since then he's been working tirelessly, notching up acclaim with his regular run of solo releases and flawless work alongside E L U C I D as Armand Hammer. A keen eared collaborator, he's been spotted working with Moor Mother, Kenny Segal, Algiers, Richie Culver, Aesop Rock and others, and this year he released his most celebrated album yet, the politically barbed 'golliwog'. Already being touted as the album of the year, it's a brutal inversion of "horrorcore" tropes, imagining IRL Black trauma against a backdrop of Bernard Herrmann-style strings, squeaking floorboards and ticking clocks. For this special Unsound Kraków performance, woods will be joined by Backwoodz associate DJ Haram.
Born in New Jersey and based in Brooklyn, DJ Haram has a litany of achievements under her belt, despite only releasing her debut solo album this year. Half of 700 Bliss alongside Moor Mother, she's also a member of billy woods' Backwoodz Studioz in house crew, having produced for E L U C I D, Fielded, Armand Hammer and woods himself. And her first album, 'Beside Myself', released this year on Hyperdub, searches out some kind of harmony in her chaotic web of interests, splicing politically-charged diatribes with pneumatic Jersey club rhythms, darbuka drums and brickwall noise. It's this energy she brings to her notorious DJ sets, collaging her own vital productions with club, experimental and rap diversions from across the musical map.
