Zachary Cooper

Zachary Cooper is a legal scholar & lecturer at the Amsterdam Law & Technology Institute whose research focuses on the ways that emergent technologies are able to subvert and confound foundational legal tenets. His current research programme explores the techno-regulatory incoherence of applying copyright to emerging forms of Generative AI-enabled media, with an eye to developing new frameworks for creative ownership for the 21st Century.

His interdisciplinary research programme has led to dozens of speaking invitations worldwide in a wide array of settings, including the International Conference of Machine Learning in Vienna, the IP Scholars Conference in Berkeley, the UNESCO AI & Human Rights Conference in Ljubljana, re:publica in Berlin, and at the Summit for the ICC Arrest Warrants Against Israeli & Hamas Leadership in The Hague.

He was recently selected as one of 50 scholars to form the Global Copyright Expert Network in Geneva, a group invited into discussion with the World Intellectual Property Office’s Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights to share research and develop policy proposals for copyright reform in the digital age.

He teaches the “The Law and Ethics of Artificial Intelligence & Robots” course at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and has guest lectured at George Washington University DC, the Berlin University of the Arts and Newcastle University in Australia.

He served with Silvia De Conca as Co-Editor of the European Journal of Law & Technology as well as Editor-In-Chief of the Amsterdam Law Forum.

Zachary is a musician and member of the experimental band Concentration, who have been lauded as “angry, horny, fierce, funny as fuck, heavy, utterly banging, one of the best bands on the planet, completely original” (The Quietus), as well as a member of Bristol’s DIY anarcho-collective Avon Terror Corps.

Zachary is a filmmaker, whose first feature-film “The End of History” won a number of awards, including the Audience Award at the Fantastic Film Festival.
