ARTIST TALK: RIVER OF FUNDAMENT

Composer Jonathan Bepler has collaborated closely with artist Matthew Barney for 30 years, beginning with music for the five-film Cremaster Cycle and extending to soundtracks for performances, video works, and happenings of many kinds. One of their most ambitious projects is River of Fundament, a nearly six-hour feature film created in part through large-scale performances that fuse music, movement, and other forms of expression pitched between opera and theater. Following a presentation of River of Fundament at Unsound with live musical accompaniment, Bepler will discuss the film’s conception as well as his endlessly experimental work with Barney over the past three decades. The conversation will be moderated by Andy Battaglia, an editor at ARTnews and Art in America, who covered River of Fundament during its development.
