Jim O’Rourke is a true legend of contemporary music, his resume going from founding Sonic Youth to mixing Joanna Newsom’s baroque masterpiece Ys to collaborational albums with Keiji Haino, Oren Ambarchi and Fennesz – and much more. It really doesn’t stop. Hailing from Chiba, Eiko Ishibashi’s work ranges from acclaimed singer-songwriter albums to soundtracks, including Drive My Car. O’Rourke and Ishibashi will perform in the wake of their collaborative album Pareidolia on Drag City. They’re followed by the eight-piece experimental rock outfit caroline, who distill midwestern emo guitar music, Appalachian folk, and minimalist classical sounds into a fine tincture that powers their bewildering caroline 2 album. Closing the night is the Washington-born, New York-based rapper billy woods. The child of a Jamaican intellectual and a would-be Marxist revolutionary, he’s known for his dark, abrasive and layered style, and will be supported by DJ Haram on stage. He plays following the release of this year’s GOLLIWOG, perhaps his darkest yet, that Pitchfork described as “a twisty horrorcore masterpiece where history and nightmares are indistinguishable”.
