Nightshade

October 13, 2017 - October 14, 2017 | Hotel Forum

Hotel Forum will be rattled to its brutalist foundations on this second epic Unsound club night, filled with bass. Room 1 kicks off with an ambient set from Up To Date Festival director Dtekk, before building with 1988’s nighttime dub stories and the live premiere of Prurient’s darkly tropical alias Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement. Bliss Signal marks the debut collaboration between Mumdance and ex-Altar of Plagues member Wife, while heavy-music dons Kevin Martin and Justin Broadrick of Zonal perform for the first time with Philadelphia-based sound artist Moor Mother. Detroit techno and electro legends DJ Bone and DJ Stingray will take over with their very first b2b set, while the night closes with the underappreciated Noncompliant, with 20 years’ experience behind the decks. Room 2 favours more playful variations on bass music, including Polish-Angolan duo Lua Preta, Hyperdub-signed South African combo Okzharp & Manthe Ribane with life-affirming songs, and PAN signee STILL presenting his leftfield vision of dancehall with vocalists from Nigeria, Eritrea and Italy. The night then heads to a Mixpak showcase from founder Dre Skull and Jubilee, before turning towards the UK bass underground with Her Records’ MM and a massive b2b2b set from Livity Sound’s Peverelist, Kowton, and Batu. Room 3 features the freshest names in hyperclub music with J.G. Biberkopf’s musique concrète acceleration, Sega Bodega’s twitchy post-genre sound, Nidia’s euphoric batida, Coucou Chloe’s futuristic style hopping, and Moro’s unique sound of ramba celebrating forgotten Afro-Latin rhythms. Also on the bill is Flohio, an up-and-coming and sharp-edged British rapper with a bright future. Unsound’s co-curator Rusałka opens.
