INSTALLATIONS, SPECIAL PROJECTS, SCREENINGS AND VIDEO ARTISTS / VJ's at UNSOUND 2011!

Unsound 2011 is full of special elements. We've already announced the extensive discussion program, now it's time to present the rest.

The majority of installations will be exhibited in the former Miraculum Cosmetics Factory - including Kathedra Gallery. "Explain" is by Canada's Jon Rafman & Daniel Lopatin (aka Oneohtrix Point Never), a new audio/visual installation exploring 3D landscapes in search of the virtual sublime. Australia's Robin Fox makes sounds for Bionic Ear users, in a multi-channel installation with video. Raime & Ewelina Aleksandrowicz / Andrzej Wojtas (aka Pussykrew) create an immersive environment using sound and video to explore the failure of the future already past. “Concord,” by Latvian Voldemars Johansons, is a sculptural musical instrument consisting of metal strings. Noway's Jade Boyd & UK's Nick Edwards (aka Ekoplekz) build a mystic triangle out of old TVs playing image and sound.

Two exhibitions at Pauza include a display of 60s, 70s and early 80s Polish sound postcards, put together by Mat Schulz and Rui Silva. Already shown in several locations, including New York and London, not only can audiences view the strikingly designed cards, they can also listen to their tracks in mp3 format or on an old portable record player.  Manuel Sepulveda, the artist behind Optigram, is known best for his sleeve art for electronic music labels such as Hyperdub and Citinite. His "Reversions" exhibit uses images to tell four different stories of physical or ontological change, as brought about, for example, by cataclysms or transfigurations.

Special projects come in the form of Black Taxi, with Patryk Zakrocki and Radek Duda. They perform at Unsound in various unexpected locations throughout the city from Monday 10.10 – 12.10, and will also install a sound installation involving a snooker table in Manggha on 11th October.

"Our Art on Your Sleeve - Guerilla Screen Printing" represents merchandising with a difference, a low-tech screen printing residency by The Impossible Assembly with Zeb Schulz at the helm. It will set up an HQ in Pauza's Kino 18, and will also appear at various festival locations. Bring T-shirts to get them instantly printed. Participants are currently able to upload images to the web, for potential inclusion in the project.

Many artists at Unsound have visuals, especially on club nights. VJ's and video artists include some long term partners such as: MFO, Jade Boyd and PussyKrew, as well as Portugal's p.ma and Krakow's own Temporary Space Design.

As for screenings, for Unsound 2010, UK audio/visual duo Jigoku put together a program of largely unknown bloodthirsty gems screened from VHS at midnight. Now Jigoku are back, to create a film series for Unsound 2011, centered on obscure and mind-bending gems of sci-fi cinema, carefully crafted to intersect with central ideas related to our "Future Shock" theme. Screenings take place at midnight each day during the festival in Kino Pod Baranami, and kick off with an old-style all-night marathon.

We are also screening the documentary "In Search of the Unsound," produced by Playground Magazine, directed by Emilio Guerra and G. Sal-Lari, and featuring music journalist Philip Sherburne as a guide. This film was shot during Unsound Krakow 2010 and explores its horror theme. Screenings will take place in Kino 18.

Our 2011 program is extremely wide-ranging. We encourage everyone to take the time to go through the week long schedule. And remember - many of the events are free! Tickets to paid events are available at TicketPro.

Please note: Unsound's closing night concert on 16th October with Sinfonietta Cracovia, A WInged Victory for the Sullen and Jacaszek has been moved from the Krakow Philharmonic Hall to the beautiful Tempel Synagogue in Kazimierz, Krakow's former Jewish district.
