Our 2012 website is launching today, with individual tickets to events also going on sale, available via Ticketpro. Please note there is limited availability to events - and many will quickly sell out. This also applies to the Unsound Festival pass. In case you need some extra motivation, Unsound just received second spot in Resident Advisor's list of the best festivals for October. And of course yet again we have more artists to announce.
Following up on the release of their acclaimed LP "V", KTL will perform at the Unsound 2012 opening. Comprised of STEPHEN O'MALLEY of Sunn O))) and PETER REHBERG (eMego), the duo reside in the darker realms of experimental music. Using guitar, electronics and processing, they will present a live soundtrack to "SUNRISE", directed by F.W.Murnau and recently voted the 5th best film of all time by the BFI. Coming at the end of the silent film era, the inclusion of "Sunrise" gives another slant on the Unsound 2012 theme "THE END".
Also huge news for fans of experimental music, Japanese artist KEIJI HAINO is not only coming to Poland for the first time, but will be joined by his legendary band FUSHITSUSHA. Formed in 1978 and drawing on noise, rock, improvisation and psychedelia, their live shows are powerful and intense.
Although both RAIME and HAXAN CLOAK have performed at Unsound before, it felt right to bring them again considering they both have new albums coming out - Raime with BLACKEST EVER BLACK and Haxan Cloak with TRI ANGLE RECORDS - and of course the way their work also swims in different ways our 2012 theme.
On a different, clubbier note, JUJU & JORDASH will play one of their weird and wonderful analogue sets in the wake of their new album "Techno Primitivism". Washington's FUTURE TIMES label will be represented by BEAUTIFUL SWIMMERS, as well as serve up twisted disco delirium from MAXMILLION DUNBAR.
And of course we couldn't overlook adding more of our native Polish acts.
JACEK SIENKIEWICZ is recognized for his club-oriented sounds, but few know he has always performed experimental music. A contemplative set on our opening night will, ambitiously, "try to capture and hold in a mere 20 minutes all the past editions of Unsound festival." A second set in the context of one of our club nights will also differ significantly from his usual shows . Although this sonic journey will be rhythm-based, Jacek says it will explore "much darker, ritual, tribal and mind-altering connotations of electronically derived music."
SZA/ZA also return but as SZA/ZA/ZE with percussionist HUBERT ZEMLER to present something special: the first large scale version of their project performing live music to accompany the experimental films of STEFAN AND FRANCISZKA THERMERSON, produced in Poland in the 1930s. This follows their acclaimed project commissioned by Unsound in 2010, performing with the short films of Roman Polanski.
MAZZOLL is quite simply a legend, one of the originators of the Yass movement, a Polish genre with roots in Jazz, punk and Zappaesque surrealism. This is the first live show to present work from his upcoming album, "Responsio Mortifera". NISKI SZUM will open the event, a powerful, enigmatic songwriting project from MARCIN DYMITER, a leading figure in Poland's experimental scene.
INNERCITY ENSEMBLE is a collective drawn from Poland's experimental and improvised music scenes, with members from cult bands such as Sing Sing Penelope, Hati, Ed Wood and Contemporary Noise Sextet. Around the release of their debut LP, their live show will present highly atmospheric jazz-based soundscapes. One band member will also join with another musician to perform as T'IEN LAI, using radio sets to create contemplative works influenced by Jewish music.
PIĘTNASTKA is a project from the talented PIOTR KUREK, consisting of a playful blend of acoustic and electronic instruments.
BNNT perform "sound bombing" in unexpected places and ways.
The percussionists HUBERT ZEMLER and TOMEK CHOŁONIEWSKI will each present solo sets of improvised music.
ROBERT PIERNIKOWSKI (of Napszyklat) and ETAMSKI will give solo sets as well as a collaborative show.
BAMBINO SOUND SYSTEM will return, to perform a "DJ set" using damaged Polish sound postcards and old portable Bambino Record Players.
Berlin-based Polish producer GATHASPAR will present two sets. The first fuses dark dubby sounds with Polish folk music, and is presented with Unsound partner Glissando Magazine. The second will represent the kind of dance music he releases on Freude Am Tanzen.
In terms of Poland's vibrant bass music scene, SENTEL will present the debut of their live set, while DJ sets will come from THE PHANTOM and CONCRETE CUT founder ARTFRUIT.
There are still a few final names to come. These will be given next week, along with details on the day program, screenings and visuals.
By the way, keep in mind that many events are free, from intimate concerts, to open and closing parties, as well as the ATOM installation.
Please note, that for reasons outside of our control, Vakula isn't able to play at Unsound Krakow 2012. Our apologies, and hopefully we will have a chance to bring him in the future.
