UNSOUND FESTIVAL NEW YORK 2012 - FIRST ANNOUNCEMENTS INCLUDE COMMISSIONED PROJECT BY BIOSPHERE AND LUSTMORD

Right off the bat, from its first outing in February 2010, Unsound Festival New York has established itself with fans and critics as essential New York culture. Unsound Festival New York embraces a range of genres from contemporary classical music to post-industrial sounds to black metal to new directions in bass.

Over the last two years, working with partners including the Polish Cultural Institute New York and the Goethe-Institute New York to connect lesser-known artists from Eastern Europe with their Western counterparts, Unsound Festival New York has brought performers and composers from over 24 different countries to New York. The range of talent has been diverse and included both many New York debuts as well as commissioned original projects such as the noted Tarkovsky inspired classical music of Ben Frost and Daníel Bjarnason with Sinfonietta Cracovia, and Carl Craig performing an original soundtrack to an Andy Warhol movie.

Save the dates for the third round Unsound Festival New York 2012 – Wednesday, April 18th through Sunday, April 22nd at venues across the city, including BAMcinématek, The Bunker, David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center, ISSUE Project Room and (Le) Poisson Rouge.

Confirmed acts include the Polish underground supergroup Baaba, London’s twisted pop duo Hype Williams, a brand new live show from dub-infected Berliner POLE, Northern Polish mutations of classical music from Jacaszek (who just launched his first US release on Ghostly), cult horror inspired sounds from Brits Demdike Stare, screwed and twisted house from rising star ITAL (about to release his debut album on Planet MU) and Hieroglyphic Being, while Los Angeles’ Sun Araw will perform with his band.

Add to that the worldwide debut of a special commission by Unsound and The Royal Norwegian Consulate General in New York and San Francisco: TRINITY features two legendary pioneers of ambient music Biosphere and Lustmord joining forces for the first time. Though both hail from very different worlds – Los Angeles based Lustmord is shrouded in darkness, whilst Biosphere's equally mysterious persona is deeply connected with the Arctic Circle - together they will create a work inspired by the first testing and development of atomic weapons in the New Mexico desert. TRINITY will also be presented by Communikey Festival in Boulder - partners in the commission.

This project is just one in a series of works related to the new Nordic scene – with a special focus on Norway. Unsound Festival New York’s 2012 program will also include the blistering live show of Oslo-based digimetal band KILLL.

Further acts and specific details for Unsound Festival New York will be released this month.

Meanwhile, keep in mind that across the pond in Poland, Unsound Festival Krakow is set to have its Tenth Anniversary edition in October 2012, celebrating this festival’s expansion from a small cellar in Krakow's Old Town into a serious international force. Not only is the Polish edition of Unsound now regarded as one of Europe's most influential festivals for electronic and experimental music, Unsound Krakow has energized and shaken up scenes in many other cities. Expect this special tenth edition of Unsound Krakow to bend expectations yet again with many large scale-commissions, debuts and one-time features. As a starter, we can reveal that yes indeed - TRINITY will have its European debut in Krakow.
