Unsound Lab Discussion On August 6th Featuring Jlin, Gaika, VTSS and Sote

Creative Practice in the COVID-10 Era

Unsound continues with its Unsound Lab series of open talks on Thursday August 6th, this time on Creative Practice in the COVID-19 Era. The discussion will be transmitted live. Listeners can ask questions through live chat.

The conversation will again involve a geographically diverse range of participants, including JLIN from Gary, Indiana - one of the most unique electronic musicians of her generation - and UK rapper GAIKA, who just released the EP Seguridad on N.A.A.F.I. SOTE is a Tehran-based experimental musician, while DJ and producer VTSS is one of Poland’s biggest names in underground club music, now based in Berlin. Moderating is Philip Sherburne, contributing editor at Pitchfork.

Together they will discuss the challenges the COVID-19 pandemic has brought for them, but also ways it may have helped them create. How are artists responding to the crisis? How do they envision the pandemic affecting their and their peers’ work? How do they time new releases, and how do they feel about the possibilities of live streaming? What are they hopeful about? And how have the events arising from the Black Lives Matter movement offered an opportunity to address longstanding imbalances and inequalities related to Black musicians and other people of color?

This panel follows on from the first discussion Black Techno Futures, which has now been archived on Youtube. You can also read a review of the talk on Resident Advisor.

Remember, Unsound is also running a closed version of its Lab program in September, for young music professionals. Places are limited, and we are receiving a large number of applications - please head to our website for more information and to apply. Applications close at the end of August.
