Matana Roberts is a composer, improviser, saxophone player and band leader best known for her ambitious series "Coin Coin", which explores black history, femininity and American identity and will consist of twelve parts in total. So far, three of those parts were made public through concerts and albums on Constellation Records, narrating political expression through a mixture of structured and improvised sounds. Roberts has dubbed her practice "panoramic sound quilting", reaching for historical and contemporary tropes, sometimes going well beyond jazz music, through elaborate use of field recordings, loops and various effects. At Unsound Matana Roberts will perform solo with the third chapter of "Coin Coin": "Run River Thee".
