Roommates Senegalese-American visual artist Coumba Samba and Estonian performance artist Gretchen Lawrence named their project NEW YORK precisely because they didn't want to be easily tracked down online. And their droll, disaffected utterances, delivered over glitchy, clubwise deconstructions, only reinforce their enigmatic, nonchalant presence. It's refreshing, decidedly contemporary underground pop, best absorbed via last year's two-headed 'Rapstar*' full-length, released very fittingly on Lolina's Relaxin Records imprint.
