As festivals and music platforms expand internationally, to what extent are they responsible for who and what they work with? How can festival culture navigate structures and systems opposed to open expression, much less the kinds of freedom embodied by party culture? Does the act of being there signal an endorsement of a host nation’s policies? Or does music open international lines of communication between estranged peoples in strange lands everywhere, even the one called home? Chris Bohn of The Wire magazine moderates. Participants include Unsound directors Mat Schulz and Gosia Plysa, CTM’s Oliver Baurhenn, Nyege Nyege’s Derek Debru, and South African rapper Sho Madjozi.
