Guy D. Middleton

Bio
Dr Guy D. Middleton is a Visiting Fellow in the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at Newcastle University. His research has focused on the archaeology of the Late Bronze Age Aegean and eastern Mediterranean and the archaeology and historiography of ‘collapse’ around the world. In 2017 his book Understanding Collapse: Ancient History and Modern Myths was published by Cambridge University Press and an edited volume Collapse and Transformation: The Late Bronze Age to Early Iron Age in the Aegean appeared in 2020. He recently worked with the BBC on their four-part series Civilisations: Rise and Fall, which aired in 2025. Rather than privileging natural or manmade disasters as the main causes of collapse, in which people are passive victims of circumstance, he has sought to emphasise the role of human agency and changing relationships in driving historical change.
