Morning Glory

Sunday morning at Unsound features two very special shows taking place at Nowa Miodowa, a meeting point of historic architecture and contemporary sound design. Both draw on folk traditions in unexpected ways.

Opening is Milkweed, whose “slacker-trad” approach brings folk, ritual and tradition into compelling new forms. Their folkloric trip-hop draws on historical source material, recontextualising ancient stories in the present through experimental sound. Their most recent album, Remscéla, reimagines the Irish pagan epic Táin Bó Cúailnge, while their live performances carry forward the oral storytelling tradition through song and experimentation.

Also occupying a musical world of his own is Greek Orthodox priest Father Dionysos Tabakis, the musician behind one of the year’s most unexpected breakouts, Paradise Metal. He has spent his life in the church, studying music and writing books, while also learning traditional Byzantine instruments. This has led to a distinctive technique of playing fretless electric guitar, which he uses to cross heavy psychedelic folk with Eastern devotional music. Unsound will host one of his first-ever live performances.
