Asked to contribute frightening music to Unsound, Polish cult band Baaba decided to reinterpret Krzysztof Komeda’s score for Roman Polanski horror spoof “Fearless Vampire Killers”. Haunting and humorous, this combines jazz, folk songs and classical music. Roll the Dice open, a Swedish duo referencing everything from John Carpenter to Basic Channel. Norwegian Miasmah artist Elegi unites with Krakow soprano Jolanta Kowalska and cello player Marcin Laczynski to reanimate silent horror film footage. Polish duo Sza/Za present a project supported by Unsound and the NY Polish Cultural Institute: live soundtracks for Polanski shorts, referencing the original Krzysztof Komeda music.

Apocalypse Now
The extreme, ear-shredding side of Unsound’s Horror theme. Norwegian band Shining fuses jazz and prog rock with black metal, resulting in blackjazz, a blistering, frenzied sound. Also from Norway, Jazkamer is a renowned noise-metal duo. Swiss group Monno plumbs the depths of doom metal to create a bleak, frightening sound with sax player Antoine Chessex at the core. Music to both calm and disturb, set in a stunning 16th century gothic church. Its natural, massive reverb is perfect for Canadian sound sculptor Tim Hecker, as well as a special project by Swedish duo Wildbirds & Peacedrums. Speaking with music journalist Philip Sherburne, horror soundtrack expert Joel Martin discusses the use of “library music” in exploitation films, from “Dawn of the Dead” to “Grindhouse”. Martin will focus on De Wolfe Music, which began its recorded library in 1927 with the advent of talkies and now has more than 70,000 tracks. Will include clips and sound from films discussed.

Bass Mutations

In the 1980s, composer/sound designer Alan Howarth used synths to create horror/sci-fi film soundtracks with the legendary John Carpenter. In a rare, special appearance, Howarth performs the scores live. Black to Comm is a renowned project from Dekorder label owner Marc Richter, utilizing electronics and traditional instruments to create ominous, melancholy works; they perform as a trio.
